Robben Island Museum

Robben Island (Esiqithini) is a door to our past - previously an island of pain and suffering but today a platform for life long learning.

Robben Island has become one of the major tourist destinations of Cape Town, and the tours are often fully booked days in advance during the tourist season. However, it can also be a very educational experience for Capetonians, who should rather choose the less busy times for visiting. The three and a half hour tour includes a return trip across Table Bay (if you are sensitive to rough seas, don’t sit downstairs without a view to the outside), a visit to the Maximum Security Prison (and Nelson Mandela’s cell), interaction with an ex-political prisoner and a 45 minute guided bus tour around the island. Some of the guides are in fact ex-prisoners and will share their stories with you during the tour, which adds a personal touch to the experience and could give you opportunity for further insight if they invite questions. Most of the guides make an effort to get an overview of their tour group and will try to tailor their information and interaction accordingly, something that will make a big difference when travelling with young children who have their own questions.

Kids Rule this winter!

Enjoy a standard tour of this World Heritage Site which is 3.5 hours long, including the two half-hour ferry rides.  Kids rule when it comes to this trip as Robben Island Museum is offering free entry for a child from 0 – 17 year old when accompanied by a paying adult. The view of Cape Town from the island is one that will be etched on your mind forever and the natural landscape of the island, the fascinating history and a visit to Nelson Mandela’s prison cell will enthral. And, with soccer on everyone’s lips, conjure up a picture of Madiba and his fellow inmates playing soccer in the prison yard and it is easy to see how important this sport is to the nation. (offer valid from 9th June – 13 July 2010)
