Devon Valley

A hiker's hidden gem in the wine lands

As parents of very young children, we appreciate places that are specially geared up for visitors with children, and have found our favourites amongst them. But often, we also end up just loving a place that works for us as adults - because the children can have a great time there, too. The vineyard walks in the Devon Valley of Stellenbosch turned out to be one of these experiences. With a toddler in a backpack, hikes these days are mostly chosen according to how easy and safe it is to stop and let the little one run around every so often, but other factors also play a role, like what kind of attractions and distractions are offered along the way. We started out from lovely Sugarbird Manor with clear maps and friendly instructions, and chose a short route (3.3 km) that would take us past3 wine estates. We went on a public holiday so only two of them were open, but that was more than enough for us and provided ample opportunity for the kids to get a break while we sampled some bubbly at J.C.Le Roux and enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Protea Hotel. Along the way, two friendly dogs joined us and offered entertainment for those in the backpacks, and we also got to enjoy the changing colours of the vines as well as a selection of fruit- and olive trees as an educational treat for the toddlers. You can choose between three routes that differ in length between 3,3 and 14,3 km but are all very manageable, and they all take you past a variety of wine estates and offer stunning view points over the valley and surrounding mountains. Highlights of the day? For us grown-up’s perhaps the informative tasting at J.C.Le Roux, and for the little ones the excitement of finding a perfect "run-fall -down-and-roll" hill at the back of the restaurant at the Protea Hotel. The lunch menu offered a good variety for big and small, the service was good and there is even a changing facility in the women’s bathroom!
